In Colombia it is customary to gift those who are grieving the loss of a loved one with a donation certificate in the name of the deceased. These donations are made to well-known foundations in the fields of education, environment, health, human services, etc.
A donation certificate typically includes the name of the deceased, the name of the donor, as well as a certificate number for transparency. Recipients have the option to visit the foundation to see how funds are spent. This is especially true with environmental foundations that plant a tree in honor of the person who died. Grieving families and friends can then visit the actual tree and in some cases attend a religious service.
